‘Upside Down - Shannon, McGoldrick, Murray & Donnelly’ This album was recorded in Co. Galway in the middle of December 2005 with eyes firmly fixed on the tour of Australia and New Zealand. The atmosphere in the studio was really positive, the weeks recording was exciting not only for the wonderful music but the band were really looking forward to the tour. Cheating the weather and leaving the winter of the north to go to sunnier climes will never lose it's appeal - and even more so if you can go with friends. Sharon, Mike, Jim and Dezi smiled and laughed their way through this recording in a way that made everything seem so easy and made the tour a very exciting prospect, both for the band and the audience. The idea of an album specifically for the tour is a great idea for the band, especially a new ensemble as this is - it gives time to gel and get a feel for each others playing - although they have all played together in the past a dynamic is needed for the foursome with such a big tour ahead. Sharon Shannon Collection 1990 - 2005’ is a double album
featuring the highlights of Sharon Shannon’s career spanning over
a decade. The tracks featured on this album are selected from her catalogue
and brilliantly encapsulate the scope of Sharon’s musical influences.
These range from traditional Irish to dance, reggae, Cajun, classical and
French-Canadian. These influences are reflected in the eclectic mix of musicians
that Sharon has collaborated with over the past 15 years and include the
likes of Donal Lunny, Cape Breton fiddler Natalie MacMaster, Sinead O’Connor,
dub master Denis Bovell, Carlos Nunez and violin virtuoso Nigel Kennedy
to name but a few. While vocalists are mainly featured on disc 2, disc 1
is devoted to instrumentals and compositions that best echo Sharon’s
unique accordion playing including classics such as Blackbird and Cavan

Libertango,
Sharon Shannon’s top ten album featuring vocalists Sinead O’Connor,
the late Kirsty MacColl, Roisin Elsafty and Pauline Scanlon along with the
radio hit of last summer, ‘What You Make It (da da da da da)’
to be released in limited edition format with a bonus CD, ‘The Acoustic
Tour’. Never commercially released, this bonus
CD was recorded live in Nova Scotia in ’03 and features the
Acoustic Band - Sharon Shannon on accordion and whistle, Mary Shannon on
Banjo and Mandolin and Jim Murray on guitar with Pauline Scanlon on vocals.
Pauline, who is receiving widespread acclaim for her debut album ‘Red
Colour Sun’, sings a fantastic version of the Joni Mitchell classic
‘A Case of You’. Sharon and the band perform 11 tracks, great
live versions of tracks from her previous albums, ‘Out The Gap’,
‘Each Little Thing’, The Diamond Mountain Sessions and Libertango.
Also two previously unreleased tracks, ‘Jims Jigs and Aires de Pontevedra...US$13.95 |

Shannon -The Diamond Mountain Sessions 2000...featured guest vocal
performances from Steve Earle, Jackson Browne and John Prine. The unexpected
hit of that album was the man from Inishbofin, stylistic singer Dessie O'Halloran,
with "Say You Love Me'. Other singers were John Hoban, Mary Staunton
and Liam O' Maonlai from the Hothouse Flowers. One reviewer says 'The core
band, The Woodchoppers, consisted of Sharon's sister Mary, James Delaney,
Lloyd Byrne, Tom Malloy, and Jim Murray. Much of the recording was done
in Letterfrack, an old former monastery in Connemara, Ireland. All the performers
stayed there while working on the album. The result is a selection of songs
that show off Sharon's traditional Irish style. Steve Earle's "Galway
Girl" works especially well when given the full traditional treatment.
"Man of Constant Sorrow" sung by Jackson Browne also sounds both
haunting and fresh. If you want to hear what Irish folks listen to when
they want to hear Irish music, slap this on your CD player."

Donogh had been the touring band for almost a year. Dónal, Steve

Shannon - Out The Gap. 1994 saw the release of Out The Gap and
it was quite a departure, recorded and mixed between Westland Studios in
Dublin and Sparkside Studios in Brixton with the legendary Denis Bovell
producing and writing some of the tracks. The production of this album was
a departure not only for Sharon but also for the notion of Irish traditional
music. The reggae influenced production values highlights Out The Gap as
a very interesting chapter in Sharon's career. As with Sharon Shannon, and
what was to become the norm, a catalogue of great musicians took part in
the recording of this album, which reinforced all the good things said and
written about Sharon and her hugely successful debut three years earlier.
Waterboy Trevor Hutchinson was here, as was sax player Richie Buckley, with
future Lúnasa guitar player, Donogh Hennessy, providing his usual
impeccable playing. These formed the nucleus of the studio band along with
the Denis Bovell Dub band members; Paul Blake on drums, Fari on percussion,
Henry Holder on keyboards and Johnny T on fiddle. As well as these international
stars and players Sharon had the noless talented but much more familiar
(to her) pair of Mary Shannon and Mary Custy.US$11.95 |

Shannon – Sharon Shannon 1991. Sharon’s highly successful
eponymous debut album in 1991 made her a household name in traditional Irish
music terms but judging by the luminaries who played on the album those
is the industry knew of her huge talent long beforehand. Working with the
Waterboys on the seminal ‘Fisherman’s Blues’ proved to
be the perfect platform to propel Sharon’s extraordinary talent towards
a recording career and the presence of The Wterboys on this album show the
enormous respect they had for this young girl from County Clare. A list
of the musicians and technicians that worked on this album reads like a
who’s who of the record industry at the time. U2’s Adam Clayton,
Scullions’ Philip King, Donal Lunny and Liam O’ Maonlai and
Steve Cooney all contribute. Most of these musicians werel attracted as
much buy her sublime talent as by her warmth and charisma which is eveident
from moments in her company, especially if she is playing. The album achieved
great success around the world attracting critical acclaim from outside
the traditional world, including people like John Peel. This wide appeal
was to be a feature of Sharon’s career, reflecting her love of all
music and her receptiveness to new ideas....US$11.95 |
