Excerpts from the review of RENEGADE in the
Telegraph.
From her stints with the Waterboys and Arcady, Sharon Shannon has been
a creative giant of Irish music... Her collaborations reveal a bold spirit
of adventure, reaching out to strangers with an eloquence that belies
her conversational reserve... For Renegade, she adds the excellent Dezi
Donnelly (fiddle), Michael McGoldrick (flute) and Jim Murray (guitar)...this
is Irish music of the highest order and Shannon should not let Renegade
come and go as quickly as her other escapades. Colin Randal
Sharon Shannon returns with 'RENEGADE' her first studio album since 2003.
Following the succes of the Collection 2005( double platinum sales) and
Live at Dolans DVD which went staright to Number 1 in the charts last
year,Sharon is back with an album which showcases her constantly expanding
musical landscape and her ability to cross over in new musical genres.Joining
her at the core of this project are Michael McGoldrick of Fused and Capercaillie
on flute and whistles and his fiddle player partner Dezi Donnelly. Completing
the quartet is Sharon's longtime guitarist Jim Murray. This quartet toured
Australia last year and played at Womadadelaide. Port Fairy and the Commonwealth
Games and it was such a musical success that Sharon called on various
members of her big band and some old friends and new to complete the stellar
line-up of contributors
full press release here.
Recorded at Sharons own Poets Corner studio, the album and new line up both called RENEGADE which mainly features new original material by the quartet, is a heady mix of traditional Irish with hip-hop beats, ragga, jazz and world music inflections. Also joining in the fun are Justin Adams (Tinariwen producer and Robert Plant guitarist), John Reynolds (Sinead O’Connor, Indigo Girls), 2Play, Roachie, saxophonist Richie Buckley (Van Morrison), and Donald Shaw (Capercaillie) to mention a few.
Both Jim Murray and Mike Mc Goldrick make vocal debuts on RENEGADE with First Time Ever I saw your Face and Curra Rd. respectively while Ragga/dancehall newcomers 2Play and Roachie join Sharon and gang on the first Single...Got a Hold Of Me!.....including one of Sharons dogs Gaffo on backing vocals!
