Tea is an ancient beverage that is enjoyed by millions of people all over the world. A number of countries have a strong tradition of growing and drinking tea, with many also enjoying tea ceremonies as a way to ritualise the tea drinking act. Some of the cultures that are most identified with tea include China, Japan, Korea, Iran, Morocco, and England. However, there is hardly a nation on Earth that does not have a strong link to the Camellia sinensis plant. In the strictest sense, the word tea defines all drinks that are made from the Camellia sinensis plant. This includes white tea, green tea, black tea, and oolong tea among many others. However, in the loose definition, the word tea can be used to define steeped beverages made from other plants, like the mint tea that is so popular in Morocco.
While many people in the west associate tea drinking with England and the United Kingdom, it is interesting to note that tea is a relatively late arrival on the European shores. The first noted use of tea drinking comes from the other side of the world, with records in China of tea drinking that go back to the 10th century BC. The Camellia sinensis plant is likely to have originated from the lands around China, particularly on the border with India and Tibet. While it is likely to have been an exclusive Chinese beverage during the very early days, it did eventually spread to other Asian countries like Japan, Korea, Thailand, and India.
Tea was introduced to Europe in the 16th century, during the Portuguese expansion that took place during this time. While tea had already spread to the Middle East by this time, its arrival on the shores of Europe caused quite a stir among the native population. Today in the 21st century, tea is often associated with England, although it continues to be consumed all throughout Asia in its various forms. While the United States of America and a few other nations have not taken on the same love for tea as that which exists in many other cultures, tea culture continues to expand and diversify around the world.
